In today's saturated beauty market, many brands promote their products as "custom-formulated." But behind the scenes, that term can mean very different things — from fully bespoke creations to minor tweaks on existing bases. Here are four signs your formula might not be truly custom.
In today's saturated beauty market, many brands promote their products as "custom-formulated." But behind the scenes, that term can mean very different things — from fully bespoke creations to minor tweaks on existing bases. Here are four signs your formula might not be truly custom.
1. Your Formula Was Finalized After Just One Sample
If a product is finalized without any iteration or feedback process, it could indicate the formula was pre-existing or only lightly modified. Real customization is collaborative, with structured sampling rounds testing everything from texture and color to performance and ingredient synergy.
2. You Never Discussed Ingredient Interactions
If formulation felt like picking ingredients from a menu — without discussion around how they interact or how they're stabilized — that's a red flag. A truly custom formula accounts for ingredient compatibility, preservation systems, emulsification behavior, and pH balance.
3. There Was No Talk of Testing or Stability
If your manufacturer didn't mention stability, microbial testing, or how the formula reacts under different conditions, you're missing critical parts of the process. Real custom development includes accelerated stability testing, microbiological safety tests, and packaging compatibility checks.
4. Your Formula Wasn't Developed with Packaging in Mind
Formula and packaging should evolve together. If your manufacturer never asked about your packaging type during development, you could face challenges like product separation, pump clogging, or active degradation from air or light exposure.
The Bottom Line
Your formula is your brand's fingerprint. It should reflect your identity, your standards, and your customer promise — not someone else's template. At FSM, the team co-creates from brief to bench to bottle.
